Introducing Miskolc City Transportation Company

Miskolc City Transportation Company (Miskolc Városi Közlekedési Zártkörűen Működő Részvénytársaság) was founded by the local government of Miskolc on 1 February 1994. The history of the company, however, reaches back to long before that. Miskolc was the first Hungarian city after Budapest to launch a tram service on 10 July 1897, which was operated by the Miskolc Tramway Company.

The first timetabled city bus service was not launched before 1 November 1948. (Interestingly, attempts were made as far back as in 1903 to operate a scheduled automobile omnibus service but, despite the successful test runs, this operation was short-lived.)

A great change occurred in the history of public transport in Miskolc in 1954, when the so far independent bus and tram operations were united in a single organisation called Miskolc Transportation Company. Miskolc Városi Közlekedési Zrt., the current company limited by shares is the direct successor of this organisation, then called MKV.

The company currently operates 41 bus services on a total line length of 165.2, and 3 tram services on a total line length of 12.7 km. Of those who live in the inner parts of the city, 79,6% have the nearest stop no farther away than 300 metres. Of those who live in the suburbs, 94,8% can reach the nearest stop walking no more than 500 metres. MVK Zrt. transports nearly 200,000 people every day.

In 2021 the total income of the company reached HUF 8,700 million. Of this amount, 39% comes from local government subsidy, 8% from customer price supplements provided by the central government, and 53% from revenues.

MVK Zrt. is certified and operates according to quality control standards MSZ EN ISO 9001:2015, MSZ EN ISO 14001:2015, MSZ EN ISO 50001:2019 and 414/2020. (VIII.30.) government decree, which guarantees the reliably high quality of the services offered.
